For my major project I am working
on one of my friend’s tracks that he is almost done recording. The song is called ‘Indigo: Ouroboros,’
and the artist is named Darren Smith.
The genre for this song is hip hop/rap. I wanted to try and mix a different genre that I haven’t
mixed much of to get a new experience.
I want to be able to make the song sound like a good hip hop song with
the help of the artist and assistance from the reference tracks. I am really hoping to make the song
sound full and of good quality.
As for the timeline, I can work in
006 on Thursday afternoons from 2pm-6pm and I can work in the audio suites
almost every morning to early afternoon each day of the week. I also have Pro Tools at home and mix
anytime of the day. My schedule
has me limited in working in 006 except for the one time a week, but I believe
it is enough time to work on this track.
For this piece Indigo: Ouroboros,
my mixing inspirations and reference tracks would include Pink Floyd’s Dark
Side of the Moon and Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst by Kendrick Lamar. The reason for Pink Floyd as a
reference track is because the artist’s song is a hip hop response to Dark Side
of the Moon. Reasoning behind
having a song by Kendrick Lamar is preference from the artists also. He believes the song reminds him of
this artist and song.
Some hurdles I believe I will hit
include not knowing how to mix a hip hop song and working with a friend’s
music, which I haven’t done before.
It is very different than a rock song. The bass should be brought up more than other genres. Another hurdle I believe I will hit is
the anxiety waiting for the rest of the tracks. Darren is currently in the middle of recording the song and
says he will be done this week. I
hope that he finishing recording in time so that I have an efficient amount of
time to mix this song. He stated there are also guest artists
on the track so I am hoping to be able to have the song sound the way they want
the song, and to give them a good mix as well as a good mix to turn in for
class. Finally, the last hurdle I
believe I will hit is making the song sound good in surround sound. This will be the first song I have
mixed in surround sound, so I hope the song doesn’t sound weird with the tracks
all around the room. These are the
major hurdles I believe I will hit for this major project.
