Minor Project Write-Up

For my minor project I chose Vikk Hewitt's-Move on off of the Cambridge site. I chose this due to the fact that it was outside of my comfort zone. I used Sarah Bereilles-love song as my reference track. Overall I was pretty happy with the turn out of this project. I feel as though I did the best I could given the resources and time put in.

I encountered several issues which set me back and forced me to look for other methods. The first was the fact that both tom mics were completely unusable. I don't know if it was just a bad mic or cable or what but they were completely distorted. My only option for an semblance at a recovery was to just use the overheads with some compression to tighten up the sounds.

My next challenge was in her vocals. There was a lot of sibilance occurring and I found that if i used a De-esser to the point that it actually removed her sibilance to a respectful level that it also squashed her tone. I used a blend of the EQ and De-esser and worked with it the best I could.

My final challenge was in the guitar. A by product of the reverb that was being used caused this nasty sounding white noise underneath the entire guitar track. I was going to using RX spectral repair to correct this but ended up not doing so due to the fact that I wanted to do the best I could without using such tools. So I used a gate, slight compression, and a lot of EQ to really bury the sound. Overall when the song plays that sound was unnoticeable after those corrections so I was happy.

This project definitely helped to expand my horizons. Also this project allowed for me to try new things to make a mix work without relying on extraneous tools like Izotope's RX, and instead working with what I was given.
