Minor Project

For my minor project, I will be working on a final project from my EMF 366 class. It is an ADR assignment. Re-watching, and listening to this project, it has come to my attention that it can be mixed way more and tweaked just so that everything is audible and clear. There are some spots where the voices are way to high, and the music is way to low and vice versa; and I would love to fix it.
My timeline is wide open. I have all day Monday, most of Tuesday, some of Wednesday, all day Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Booking time in 006 will be the tricky part because of all the people that are trying to get into that room for mixing, recording, class ect. I am planning on working on this project weekly. A few hours here and there. I don't think there will be much of a problem with getting an hour or two in every day; it would be the larger 4 hour chunks that would most likely be the problem.

When my partner from last semester and I initially found the clip, we wanted to make it a cheesy B-list Kung Fu remake, just like the D-list movie that it is. We looked at Kung Pow: Enter the Fist, for the ADR and overdubbing parts. And we also looked at Enter The Dragon to see how everything seemed to be mixed.I am taking that same approach, just with better audio, also this isn't a fight scene unfortunately so there will be no punching or yelling, or any swooshing fist sounds. As I stated earlier, there are some parts where the voices are too low and the music is too high; and vice versa. Also the sound effects can be altered just a little bit. There was almost clipping on some of the effects, so that can be changed.

I hope to bring a better mix to this project. I want to see what I can do with it in surround sound.I think it would be cool to mess around with a copy and see what some of the voices would sound like coming from behind you, or have the music go from the front to the back. I just want to play around with the audio a bit and see what cool things I can come up with. The main focus though is to clean up all the audio levels, fix some of the effects a bit, just tweak it so it sounds better than how I left it.
I don't expect to hit any major hurdles per say but something huge may come up. I do expect studio time to have a bit of set back. I think little things will come up though like levels not willing to cooperate, the files won't be able to be found, that's a big one. Just nuisances that will hinder my progress.

Recording it was half the battle, now its time for the second act, the mixing stage. I am looking forward to seeing what this project's potential and my potential is for this project. It will be fun, and a learning experience.

  1. Nate - this looks like this could be a lot of fun, and interesting as a surround project. Make sure you feel comfortable enough with surround for this project, it's not required for the minor, but for the major project.
